WebMaster's Corner November 2016
November 2016
Webmaster's Corner
According to the Georgian calendar, November is the eleventh month of the year. In the early Roman calendar, it was the ninth month. The Roman Senate elected to name the eleventh month for Tiberius Caesar, and since Augustus time, it has had only 30 days. It is one of four months which have 30 days.
November comes between the fall and winter months. The leaves are almost completely gone from the trees, and the rest have lost most of their color. The Anglo-Saxons referred to November as the 'wind month' and the 'blood month' - probably because this is the month they killed their animals for food.
Lots of activities come to a halt in November. The crops have been harvested and either put in storage, or sent to processing plants or mills. Farmers already know if their year has been successful or not. Football is the main sport of the month. The weather is usually beautiful for this kind of sport.
November has been recognized as
- National Adoption Month
- Family Caregivers' Month
- National Diabetes Month
- National Lung Cancer Awareness Month
The gemstone for November is
the Topaz
The flower for November is
the Chrysanthemum.
Now, What Does November 2016 Have in Store for Us:
1 NOV 2016 - Change Your Clocks
Daylight saving time ends for 2016 overnight between Saturday, 5 Nov, and Sunday 6 Nov, meaning that before you go to bed Saturday, make sure to turn the clocks in your house back one hour.
As the old expression goes, "spring ahead, fall back," meaning before bed on Saturday night, set your clock BACK one hour. You'll also be 'gaining' one hour of time (the same hour you 'lost' last Spring).
The International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Energizer battery company are also urging you to adopt the life-saving habit of changing the battery in your smoke detector when you change your clock. This simple and easy action will double a family's chance of surviving a home fire.
You will 'spring ahead,' or turn your clocks forward one hour next year on Sunday, 12 March 2017.
Tuesday, 8 NOV 2016 - Election Day
The Presidential election is coming up and control of the Congress continues to be the hot-button issue this year. If you are among the 60% who have not already voted early, remember to get out and vote. If you end up not liking the results and you did NOT vote, then shame on you!
By an act of Congress in 1845, the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November was designated Election Day for future presidential elections. The first such election took place on November 7, 1848. Whig Party candidate Zachary Taylor won out over Democrat Lewis Cass and Free-Soil candidate (and former president) Martin Van Buren. Taylor's running mate was Millard Fillmore, who became the nation's 13th president on July 10, 1850, upon Taylor's untimely death.
Veterans Day - 11 November 2016
Veteran's Day is November 11. It was originally called Armistice Day and meant to commemorate the end of the "war to end all wars" (World War I ended 11 November 1918). It was signed into law by Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The remembrance was extended in 1954 to cover the veterans of all wars after World War II and the Korean War.
This day is also known as Remembrance Day in Europe.
Let us take a moment to remember and thank all of our veterans, and render to them the respect they have truly earned.
Thanksgiving Day - 24 NOV 2016
The premier holiday of November is Thanksgiving. It is held on the 4th Thursday in November. The first Thanksgiving was given by the pilgrims in 1623. The first national Thanksgiving Day in United States proclaimed by President George Washington, November 26, 1789 did not become an official holiday until President Lincoln declared it in 1863. The holiday was created to give thanks for the plenty of the harvest. Today it is celebrated by family gatherings. A traditional dish for the event is roast turkey and dressing.
This is a day for us to give thanks for our many blessings. Even in these trying times, we are still the most blessed country in the world. Take the opportunity to share our gratitude with friends and loved ones on this special day.
Guy Fawkes' Day
The notorious Gunpowder Plot to blow up the English Houses of Parliament failed, November 5, 1605. England celebrates this day as Guy Fawkes Day. Centuries later, the Occupy Wall Street protestors have adopted Guy Fawkes masks as a symbol of their movement to accomplish their stated aims (whatever they may really have been).
Fawkes' plot was discovered and he was arrested before he could accomplish his stated aims. Over the next few days, he was questioned and tortured, and eventually he broke. Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, thus avoiding the agony of the mutilation that followed.
Nov 7, 1811 - William Henry Harrison is Victor at Tippecanoe
William Henry Harrison (February 9, 1773 – April 4, 1841) was the ninth President of the United States (1841), an American military officer and politician, the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd president, and the first president to die in office. He was 68 years, 23 days old when elected, the oldest president elected until Ronald Reagan in 1980, and last President to be born before the United States Declaration of Independence. Harrison died on his 32nd day in office of complications from pneumonia, serving the shortest tenure in United States presidential history. His death sparked a brief constitutional crisis, but that crisis ultimately resolved many questions about presidential succession left unanswered by the Constitution until passage of the 25th Amendment.
Before election as president, Harrison served as the first territorial congressional delegate from the Northwest Territory, governor of the Indiana Territory and later as a U.S. representative and senator from Ohio. He originally gained national fame for leading U.S. forces against American Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, where he earned the nickname "Tippecanoe" (or "Old Tippecanoe"). As a general in the subsequent War of 1812, his most notable contribution was a victory at the Battle of the Thames in 1813, which brought an end to hostilities in his region.
Nov 22, 1963 - JFK Assassination
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, was assassinated 53 years ago at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (18:30 UTC) on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was fatally shot while traveling with his wife Jacqueline, Texas governor John Connally, and the latter's wife, Nellie, in a Presidential motorcade.
The ten-month investigation of the Warren Commission of 1963–1964 concluded that the President was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone and that Jack Ruby acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial.
These conclusions were initially supported by the American public; however, polls conducted from 1966 to 2004 found that as many as 80 percent of Americans have suspected that there was a plot or cover-up.
Contrary to the Warren Commission, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) in 1979 concluded that President John F. Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. The HSCA found both the original FBI investigation and the Warren Commission Report to be seriously flawed. While agreeing with the Commission that Oswald fired all the shots which caused the wounds to Kennedy and Governor Connally, it stated that there were at least four shots fired and that there was a "high probability" that two gunmen fired at the President. No gunmen or groups involved in the conspiracy were identified by the committee, but the CIA, Soviet Union, organized crime and several other groups were said to be not involved, based on available evidence. The assassination is still the subject of widespread debate and has spawned numerous conspiracy theories and alternative scenarios.

New Members Added to the Roster Last Month
We hope our new VP for Membership, CSM(RET) Larry Elsom, will continue his successes in recruiting new members. But, Larry can not do it alone. We hope ALL if our members do what they can to identify and bring in candidates for membership. The process for a new member's joining RAFINO is simplicity itself: just go to the online New Member Application form, review the membership requirements, and complete and submit the form. Here is the link to that form: http://www.rafino.org/NewMemberForm
And, Finally, ...

New Officers - Elected and Appointed
From the Prez:
Our new Elected/Appointed Officers
(please share this with your spouse)
RAFINO Members – We are excited to announce we’ve got a great slate of elected and appointed officers to work on behalf of our membership for the next two years.
As one, unified, organization, I prefer one individual leading the areas you see below, and not both an Officer and NCO individual.
We are one organization where to me, all members are equal.
Everyone below has graciously agreed to fill the positions as stated.
If you see them or talk to them, please express your appreciation.
We are all excited to continue growing our organization in a way that makes everyone proud to be join and participate, especially when it comes to attending our Reunions.
The Officers (elected and appointed) of RAFINO are:
- President COL (RET) Kevin Troller
- 1st VP CSM (RET) Wayne Ingle
- Secretary/Treasurer LTC (RET) Imre Volgyi
- Webmaster/Datamaster LTC (RET) Robby Robson
- 2nd VP (Reunions) LTC (RET) Elaine McNeill
- 2nd VP (Membership) CSM (RET) Larry Elsom
- Assistant Treasurer LTC (RET) Anthony Lorenz
- Assistant Secretary MSG (RET) Bruce Prater
Can I also remind you as you encourage others to join RAFINO, that the first year of dues are FREE (FREE is ALWAYS good!), and after that it is a very affordable $10/year.
That’s a real bargain; and hopefully our dues will never be the reason that anybody wouldn’t join us.
Proud to be Your Prez,
Kevin G. Troller
New Dues Policies Coming
From the Prez:
Membership Categories, Dues, and Lifetime Membership
(where appropriate, please share this with your spouse)
Your elected and appointed officers are working hard to refine our organizational By-Laws and policies so we continue to run as an efficient and effective organization. This note is to inform our membership about our membership categories, annual dues, and lifetime membership opportunities using a tiered structure based on age. The following membership dues and lifetime membership rates will be effective January 1, 2017.
Membership categories:
- Active: Such membership requires that the member be in an official military service retired status (or nearing retired status as in being on terminal leave) in the Finance Corps or Financial Management Corps, in commissioned, non-commissioned, or warrant officer grade. Retired status includes those who served 20 or more years of Service, were medically retired, or participated in an authorized early retirement option. Active members are authorized to attend meetings and/or vote on all matters. Active members pay dues as defined below.
- Associate: Such membership is available to surviving spouses of deceased Active members. Associate members may vote on Reunion proposals. Associate members do not pay dues.
- Honorary: Such membership may be granted, upon unanimous vote of the officers of the Society, to a select few persons who have rendered highly singular services to the Organization, and who are deemed by the Organization to be deserving of such recognition. Honorary members do not pay dues.
Membership Dues: Annual dues are used to defray organizational costs such as distribution of a membership roster and newsletter, maintain a current webpage on the internet, and printing, postage, and other office supplies. The reunion conducted every two years (or as otherwise agreed by vote of the general membership) shall be financially self-sufficient. None of the annual dues go towards any of those expenses. Should an active member stop paying dues, they become inactive members. Active member status will recommence when the member in default, again pays annual dues, which allows them to vote on membership issues, and to attend reunions. Excess earnings, regardless of source, shall be available for distribution to other IRS approved tax exempt veterans organizations or organizations that support veterans. The amount for these distributions are recommended by the RAFINO Treasurer based on the financial stability of our organization and planned future expenditures. A committee will be appointed to review organizations eligible and worthy of a distribution. At our Reunion’s general business meeting, the eligible organizations will be vetted, along with a recommendation for the amount to receive, which will be voted on by the general membership. The fiscal health and financial stability of our organization will be the determinant of whether we make a distribution, and the amount to be distributed.
Annual Dues Rate: $10 annual dues are payable January 1st for all existing members, or immediately upon acceptance of a new member application. If a new member joins on July 1, or later, they will not be charged for the current calendar year. Their first $10 payment will be applied to the next calendar year beginning January 1. Dues are requested as close to January 1 as possible, with current year dues being delinquent on March 31. Dues are payable to the RAFINO Treasurer, at the address posted on our website.
Lifetime Membership: For the first time, we are offering a lifetime membership at the following rates according to the member’s age at the time the lifetime membership is requested. If a current member has paid their membership for years in advance, those advance payments will be applied towards a lifetime membership should that member so desire. Dues paid for prior years will not be applied towards the lifetime membership. If a lifetime member dies, and has a spouse, the lifetime membership does not transfer to the spouse. The spouse becomes an Associate Member, and will no longer pay dues. The following lifetime rates are offered, also effective January 1, 2017:
Less than or equal to age 50: $200
Age 51-60: $150
Age 61-70: $125
Age 71-80: $100
Age 81-90: $ 75
Age 91 and above: FREE

Kevin G. Troller

Please Update your Date of Birth
Please take a moment - if you have not already done so - to go to your membership record and add in your date of birth. Previously, we have maintained our members' birth days and months, but there was no year info. We have determined that we need to pay more attention to our members' chronological ages when we plan activities and events around our reunions. We know we are all growing older, we just don't have a very good feel for how much older!
And, remember, this Web Site belongs to you the members of RAFINO. Your Webmaster(s) just have the pleasure of making it do what you want it to do. Have a great month, review and correct your data on the web roster, and let us know what you would like to see on your web site.
Your webmaster, Robby Robson
