Geomagnetic Storm Coming

1775, 26 Oct 2016

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reports that a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect for October 26 (UTC), due to anticipated coronal hole high-speed stream effects.

On October 25, as predicted, a stream of high-speed solar wind hit Earth’s magnetic field, sparking geomagnetic storms around the north and south poles.

According to Spaceweather.com, one episode of strong storming registering G3 (strong) on the NOAA scale of geomagnetic activity occurred, accompanied by lesser disturbances and auroral displays on both poles.

A G2 storm could affect high-latitude power systems, causing voltage alarms, while long-duration storms may cause transformer damage. In addition, HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho.

Spaceweather.com said more auroras are head, and the broad and fast solar stream is expected to influence Earth for days
