On 14 June, flag day, your Web Master will place 80 of the 1,470 flags that Rotarians will put out in Kilgore. It is a fund raising program with a heavy patriotic touch. The flags fly from a 10 foot, 1 1/4 inch pole that is placed into a holder that is sunk18 inches in the ground. Click here to see more about flag day.
We honor our Fathers on the 17th or maybe we will be honored by our children and grandchildren. Be sure to set this date aside for recognition and celebration.
20 June will be the first day of summer.
The Summer solstice occurs on the 20th as a seasonal turning point. Solstice, in astronomy, is the term applied to either of the two points in the ecliptic at which the sun is farthest from the celestial equator. The solstice north of the celestial equator is called the summer solstice because the sun is at its greatest declination around June 20 (at the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere); the solstice south of the celestial equator, called the winter solstice, occurs around December 21. The seasons are the reverse of the above for people living in the Southern Hemisphere. The term solstice means "sun stands still"; at these times the sun changes little in declination from one day to the next and appears to remain in one place north or south of the celestial equator. Now, About June in History:
The Battle of Midway began on 4 June 1942 and marked the turning point in the war in the pacific. Prior to Midway, the Japanese Navy "owned" the Pacific. Afterwards, they never were able to marshall any strategically significant victories.
The Miracle of Dunkirk was the evacuation of the last British and Allied troops from Flanders port of Dunkirk on 5 June 1940. Ordinary boatman came in the “little ships” from rivers and coastal waters of England to ferry the troops to the deep draught ships waiting in deeper waters. This was called a “miracle” because what they did was deemed impossible. Lest we forget their bravery and valor, take a moment to remember this event on its 72nd anniversary.
Just a few days later, France fell on 22 June 1940.
A year later on 21 June 1941 Hitler invaded Russia. The German Army didn’t bring winter uniforms and paid a high price for this oversight.
D-Day, 6 June 1944, was the start of the allied invasion to liberate Europe.
The next war started 25 June 1950 when the North Korean forces crossed the dividing line to invade the South. The Korean War was on.
