Update: SGM JIMMY L. BROWN To TAPS

2519, 11 Jun 2019

Update:

The celebration of Life will be on Friday, 5 July, 2019, at 1630 hours in the VFW on Lee Road north of Fort Benjamin Harrison.

SGM (RET) Jimmy Lee Brown, 68, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, with his family by his side.

Jimmy was born on November 1, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama to Cecil Brown and Ruby (Hall) Brown. Predeceased by his furry dog child, Reece, the apple of his eye.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Katrina (David) Bond; son, David Brown; brother, Cecil Ray (Marian) Brown; significant other, Sandee Hawkins; and former spouse & mother of his children, Sherry Brown; as well as 3 grandchildren and 1 nephew.

A veteran of the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, Jimmy proudly served his country for more than 40 years, as both a soldier (21 years) and then later as a civil servant (20 years). He retired from the Army as Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Finance School and Regimental Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Finance Corps at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. After retiring from the military, he worked as a Financial Analyst at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

Jimmy will be remembered as a feisty soul who was well liked by many. He enjoyed playing baseball in his earlier years and golf in his later years. Always a true Alabama football fan (Roll Tide!), Jimmy was a proud grandfather who loved spending time with his family, researching family trees and participating in a good political debate.

Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 3:00PM. The Brown family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary with Jimmy's care. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Indianapolis, Indiana. Check back later for more details.

Jimmy and I were in the Finance School at the same time back in the early 1980s.  Once, when passing through Indianapolis many years later, we just happened to see one another at the Moving Vietnam Wall across the street from Building 1.  More recently, he helped me track down another long-lost friend, John Benedict.  Jimmy was a great guy, and my life was better for having known him.  My condolences to his family.

Very sorry to learn of SGM Brown's passing. He and I managed to accomplish some good things for USAREUR in the early 80's. I had a great team with the Finance Services Branch and he was one of my best.

Prayers for Jimmy and his family.
