Help on Searching for Articles/Content

Concept of Operation

Purpose:
This page makes it possible for the user to search through the various types of content stored on the RAFINO website. Whereas, in the past, you went to the "Bulletin Board" or "Updates Page" or "Whats Hot/New" page or "Finance Stories" page to see related articles, this new website has moved those articles into a searchable database that can be searched in the "Browse Content/Articles screen.

Content Types
The kinds of content that you will find in the database include:

  • Bulletin Board Articles
    • General notices
    • Obituaries
    • Member illnesses/conditions/status
  • Breaking News Articles
    • What's "Hot"
    • What's "New"
  • Historical Articles
    • Finance Stories
    • Finance Corps Museum ("Did you know ...?) Articles

Search Capability:
Every Article Will be classified according to the above scheme and will contain a short, descriptive headline and a date indicating when the article was posted to the site. These can be used as search criteria to find and review the articles in which you may be interested

Below are examples of how to use the "Browse Content/Articles" search screen.

Examples

The Search Screen

The search screen is divided into 4 major areas where you can enter criteria to define/refine your search for articles. The screen shown below is set up to default to criteria which will call up:

  1. Content Type: All Types
  2. Keyword Narrowing: (none)
  3. Content Category: Bulletin Notices
  4. How Delivered: as an indexed list of article headlines, AND
  5. When Posted: Date Range (4/23-5/23/2011

When the user clicks on the "SUBMIT" button at the bottom of the screen, the system returns a list of Content Headlines, each of which is a "clickable" link to the full detail of the article. For example:

And clicking on the "Preserving TRICARE" headline lets you view the full article:

Scenarios

TAPs Postings Year-to-Date

Assume you want to check out the obituaries posted since the first of the year 2011. The search criteria would be:

  1. Bulletins
  2. narrowed byBulletin - Deceased (TAPs)
  3. index (or you could check Full Detail, whatever your preference)
  4. Range of Dates, setting the beginning date to 1/1/2011

The result (assuming delivered as an index):

Postings on File Mentioning (Jerry) Heard

The search criteria would be:

  1. All Content
  2. Narrowed by Keyword="Heard"
  3. Delivered as Index
  4. Posted = All Posting Dates (i.e., ignore date range)

The result would be:

(Note: Admiral Koenig really didn't mention Jerry Heard in that first article. However, clicking on Admiral Koenig's article and searching for "heard" yields the phrase "most of you heard about while you were on active duty". This illustrates the fickleness of computer searches. You need to be alert to these sorts of "false positives" in your search criteria/results.)
