UPDATE: MG Stephen R. (Dickie) WOODS to TAPs

2198, 13 Mar 2018

MG Stephen R. (Dickie) WOODS passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

Kevin Troller provided the following:

Last night I spoke with MG Woods’ daughter, Sharon, who first wanted me to thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers, and concern for her Dad.  She asked me to pass along that her Dad passed away at 2pm yesterday afternoon after a short illness. They plan to go to the funeral home today to make arrangements.  MG Woods desired to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, so the family will be planning to do that.  That part may take a while, so they plan to have a viewing/visitation at the funeral home sometime in the next week.  Whenever the burial occurs at Arlington, the family plans a service at the post chapel followed by a reception/luncheon at the Officer’s Club.  As information is available on any of this; I’ll be happy to pass along what I find out.  I know many of you on this email had the opportunity to work for and with MG Woods, as did I serving as his AXO when he was DCSRM, USAREUR in the early 80’s.  He made it clear to me on several occasions that he wasn’t a fan of Finance Officers; and he had several stories telling me why.  However, when he had the opportunity to serve as Commander, Soldier Support Center, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, from 1988 – 1990, he was “transformed” by having an incredible XO, our former Finance Corps Commandant, COL Troy Clay.  Troy and I have swapped stories over the past week, but it was only last night that I learned that MG Woods promoted Troy to the ranks of Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel.  In our many calls, MG Woods never agreed he grew to love Finance Officers, but I know he loved Troy, and I know there was at least an affinity for Finance Officers.  I found the attached link from Military Times sharing some of the Awards and Citations of Major General Stephen Richard Woods, United States Military Academy, Class of ’56.  May he rest in peace !!!

Update:

Sharon, MG Wodds' daughter,  provided the following info on the viewing/visitation for MG Woods:  This Friday, February 16, from 5pm – 9pm (EST) at Jefferson Funeral Chapel.  Address: 5755 Castlewellen Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315.  Phone: (703) 971-7400.  Also, the death notice will run in the Washington Post for 3 days starting this Tuesday, February 13.  The obituary will run later; that’s still being worked out.  Here is a link to Jefferson Funeral Chapel: http://www.jeffersonfuneralchapel.com/

Update 2, 13 MAR 2018:

I got a note last night from MG Woods’ daughter, Sharon, who advised me that her Dad’s funeral will be July 31, 2018

, at Arlington National Cemetery.  Services will begin at 1pm at the Old Post Chapel, with a reception at the Officer’s Club after the internment.  That’s all the info I have at this time; but I’ll pass anything else I receive forward.  For now, at least those of you in the DC Area, or within travelling distance, can put July 31 on your calendar. (Kevin)

I served as the Director, Personnel Service Support Proponent Office under MG Woods 1988-1990 when he was the Commander of the USA Soldier Support Center at Fort Harrison.  He was a magnificent leader with tremendous energy, enthusiasm and a drive to always do what was best for the Army and our Corps.  His credibility within the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the Army Staff undoubtedly contributed to our continued existence at a time when there were those within these communities who felt strongly that the Finance Corps should be either combined with the AG Corps or disestablished altogether.  If you are grateful for the priviledge of wearing the Finance Corps Diamond, please remember to share some of that gratitude with an Infantry officer who more than once stood as our guardian angel - MG Dick Woods.  COL Mark L. Brown, USA (Ret.)
