Henry Jerome Schiefer, Lt. Col, US Army, Retired passed away Dec. 19, 2017 at his home in Harrisonburg.
           
He was born, Dec. 13, 1934 in Huntington Station, N.Y., to the late Carl and Catherine Hoffman Schiefer and grew up in Lindenhurst, N.J.  He was a 1952 graduate of St. John’s Prep School in Brooklyn, N.Y., a 1956 graduate, Cum Laude, Niagara University, BBA, 1971 graduate Syracuse University, MBA.  He served our country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1976 and his assignments included, Limestone, ME; Stuttgart, Germany; Birmingham AL; Atlanta GA., Saigon, Vietnam; Cleveland, Ohio; Hampton, VA.; and Fort Dix, NJ. He moved to Harrisonburg from Hampton in 1980. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th degree, Retired Army Finance Officers Organization, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign wars and JMU Duke Club; Friends of Carrier Library, JMU and volunteered with numerous organizations. He served on the Board of Directors for Boy Scouts of America and Valley Program for Aging Services, and served on the Church Parish Council and Church Finance Council. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal and received numerous certificates of Recognition and Achievement. He enjoyed bicycling, sports, camping and traveling to all 50 states. He toured the Holy Land and followed the footsteps of Paul.  He retired as Financial Manager at JMU in 1999.
           
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores Ann Shtyk Schiefer and his brothers, Charles & William Schiefer.
           
On August 11, 2012, he married Lucille Eby Horst who survives.  Also surviving are sons, Robert of Charlottesville, David & wife, Suzi of Lynchburg and Douglas Horst & wife, Paige of Leesburg; daughter, AnnMarie Lampersberger & husband, Kirby of Prince George, VA; grandchildren, Christopher & wife Beth of Summersville, SC, Megan & Kailey of Gaithersburg, MD, Jeb, Case & Claire of Lynchburg and Ethan & Emily Horst of Leesburg.
          
A funeral mass was held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Silvio Kaberia officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors was held 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 22, 2017, at Culpeper National Cemetery.
