RAFINO Bridge Tournament:

On Friday evening, twenty of our finest bridge players kicked off RAFINO 2000 by gathering for a spirited battle of skill and wits. (Although this placed Claud Wallace at a disadvantage, Virginia proceeded to cover nicely for him.)

After 27 highly competitive hands, John and Maria SPERRY emerged victorious over the field, followed closely by Irv and Jeanne LECKER in second place. Claud and Virginia WALLACE nosed out Dick and Sally PEDERSEN for third. The winners selected their own prizes – either wine or bridge books.  It takes little imagination to figure out which went first.

Russ DELANEY directed the game, and the players kept him busy all evening. Officiating was easy; however, keeping the pitchers of beer and bowls of snacks filled was a major challenge.

All the bridge hands were pre-dealt from records taken from an earlier international bridge tournament. At the end of the evening, each player received a handout with an analysis of each hand ’s bidding and play.

Scoring and play were conducted duplicate bridge style. After the first few hands even those who had never played tournament bridge before were quite comfortable with the format.

Final Results:

1. John and Maria SPERRY

2. Irv and Jeanne LECKER

3. Claud and Virginia WALLACE

4. Dick and Sally PEDERSEN

Other competitors were Bill NELSON, Joan JOHNSON, the BAINS, the BENTES, the EBERSBERGERS, the LOTTS, and the GOLDENS.

A great time was had by all and the players hope this becomes a normal part of our RAFINO reunions.
